Background of the Study
The availability of essential medicines is a critical component of effective healthcare delivery. In Kano State, Nigeria, public health facilities are expected to provide a range of essential drugs necessary for treating common illnesses and managing chronic conditions. However, challenges such as supply chain inefficiencies, funding constraints, and mismanagement often lead to frequent stockouts and limited access to these medicines (Aminu, 2023). Ensuring a steady supply of essential drugs is crucial not only for the successful treatment of patients but also for maintaining public trust in the healthcare system. Recent studies indicate that reliable access to essential medicines significantly improves health outcomes and reduces morbidity and mortality rates. In Kano State, initiatives aimed at strengthening the pharmaceutical supply chain and enhancing inventory management have been introduced, yet the overall availability remains inconsistent. Evaluating the current state of essential medicine availability in public health facilities is vital for identifying gaps, understanding the underlying causes of shortages, and proposing interventions to ensure continuous supply (Okeke, 2024). This study will provide an appraisal of essential medicine availability in Kano State and explore the impact on patient care.
Statement of the Problem
Public health facilities in Kano State face significant challenges in maintaining an uninterrupted supply of essential medicines. Frequent stockouts and inconsistent drug availability hinder effective treatment and force patients to seek expensive alternatives from private pharmacies, thereby exacerbating health inequities. Contributing factors include inefficient supply chain management, inadequate funding, and logistical issues related to drug procurement and distribution. These challenges not only compromise the quality of care but also erode patient confidence in the public health system. The lack of reliable data on the extent and causes of medicine shortages further complicates efforts to develop targeted solutions. Without addressing these issues, the gap between policy intentions and on-ground realities will continue to undermine healthcare delivery in Kano State (Chukwuma, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on selected public health facilities across urban and rural areas in Kano State. Data will be collected through facility assessments, interviews with pharmacy staff, and review of procurement records. Limitations include variability in facility practices and potential inaccuracies in record-keeping.
